Welcome to the new King Drew Magnet High School Technology update site.
I will be working to up date the K/D community on what is going on at the school regarding technology, whether it be at the LAUSD level, school site level, network level, or all the way down to the classroom level.
Where do we stand right now. At the end of the 2010-2011 school year the network was in serious trouble. We had lost our NAS server which worked with our user management software (V-Casel) to regulate user log-in rights, data storage, and printer functions. As many of you know first had the loss of this device meant the loss of, in some cases, years of accumulated work, lesson plans, and records.
The bad news: As of August 18th the situation is basically the same. I have been working with CPSI, the vendor that supplies our user management software, to resolve the NAS server problem.
The good news: A new NAS server has been purchased and we are in the process of configuring it for use with the V-Casel software. What is slowing us down is that fact that the CPSI engineer has to work remotely from his office in Ohio. We are getting close to solving this problem and hope to have it up and running before the first day of class on September 7th.
Other areas of interest regarding technology. At the end of the last school year we took delivery of a number of new computers. The money for these was provided by the Title 1 office so we were mandated to position them in core area classrooms. If you received one I will be working my way through them to get them set up on the school network as quickly as possible.
Please be aware that I am going to have to remove older computers from classrooms to give some of the non-core classrooms/and computer labs refurbished machines. This is especially true for those teachers who have the Gateway computers in their rooms. These computers have a mother board that starts to fail after about two years (per LAUSD ITD Repair) and since they do not have a warranty on them (Gateway went bankrupt) ITD declares them BER (beyond economical repair) when they fail.
Believe me when I say I would love to leave all of the older machines in yor classrooms for use by you and your students. However, most of our Gateway machines are now going into their third year plus of service and I am starting to see failures. In other words I need to have spares to begin filling the gaps in both classrooms and computer labs.
Email - Beginning this fall all students will be issued LAUSD email accounts. Students must turn in a current AUP form signed by themselves and their parent/guardian. If you are not aware of it LAUSD has contracted with Google to manage the student email accounts. It will still be run through the LAUSD interface but it will show up in Google with access to Google Docs and other Google applications. If they use this acocunt as intended their should be no more excuses about an assignment left at home or on a forgotten flash drive.
That's it for now.
